1. Introduction
Welcome to Washrooms. We value your trust and are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what choices you have regarding your data when using our washroom search and review application.
Washrooms is intended primarily for users in India, and we handle personal data in line with India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Our lawful basis for processing is your consent, which you provide by signing in and choosing to use features such as location search and reviews. You may withdraw that consent at any time, as described in Section 10.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information to provide a better experience for all our users. This includes:
- Account Details: Your full name, email address, and avatar image, retrieved from your Google account during Sign-In. We never receive or store your Google password.
- Contributions: Washrooms you list (name, address, type, and map coordinates), reviews you write (cleanliness, water, and smell ratings, comments, and any photos), and reports you submit about a listing.
- Your Lists: The washrooms you save as Favorites and the ones you open, which are recorded in your visit History so you can return to them.
- Approximate Location: With your permission, your device's GPS coordinates, used to find washrooms near you (see Section 5).
- Security Logs: To stop scraping and abuse, our server counts requests per visitor for a short time. We store a one-way hash of your IP address (never the IP itself) with the count, and delete these records within 2 days.
- Location Requests: If you ask us to map a location, we store the area, city, state and country you enter, your email address, any note you add, what you searched for and the place's map coordinates, so we can prioritise it and tell you when it's added.
- Payments: If you choose to support the project, Razorpay processes the payment. We receive a payment confirmation, but never your card, UPI or bank details.
- Photo Metadata: Photos you upload may contain embedded information such as the location where the photo was taken (EXIF data). Please be aware of this before uploading.
3. How We Use Information
The data we collect is processed for the following objectives:
- Showing washrooms near your current location and letting you search across the directory.
- Saving your Favorites and visit History so you can find washrooms again.
- Displaying your contributions and ratings, and attributing reviews to your profile.
- Maintaining community integrity — reviewing new listings, acting on reports, and preventing spam and abuse.
4. Google Authentication
We leverage Google Sign-In via Supabase to authorize account sessions.
This integration allows us to securely authenticate your credentials without storing password hashes. We only retrieve your email address, display name, and avatar image.
5. Location Permissions
To show washrooms near you, we request access to your device's location. This permission is optional — you can decline it and still search for washrooms manually — and you can revoke it at any time in your browser or device settings.
When granted, your coordinates are used to query nearby washrooms and are not stored as a continuous location trail in our databases. However, when you open a washroom's page it is added to your visit History, which is linked to your account so you can revisit it. You can clear individual entries or your entire History at any time from the History page.
6. Reviews and Contributions
When you submit reviews or list new washrooms, these contributions are associated with your account ID.
This link is necessary to display your metrics in the "My Contributions" dashboard, maintain accountability, prevent duplicate submissions, and enforce compliance with our platform rules.
Please remember that reviews, listings, and photos you submit are visible to other users. Your display name and avatar are shown alongside your reviews; your email address is never shown publicly. Avoid including sensitive personal information in comments or photos.
8. Third-party Services
We rely on a small number of trusted service providers to operate the app:
- Supabase: Our database and authentication provider, which securely stores your account, contributions, and lists.
- Cloudinary: Hosts the photos you upload with your reviews.
- Vercel: Hosts and delivers the application.
- Razorpay: Processes voluntary contributions under its own privacy policy and India's payment regulations.
- Google: Provides Sign-In. When you tap "Get Directions", we open Google Maps in a new tab so you can navigate — we do not embed Google Maps tracking within the app.
Some of these providers may store or process data on servers located outside India. We only share the data necessary for each provider to perform its function.
9. Data Retention
We retain your account information and contributions for as long as your account remains active, so that the directory and your history stay available to you and the community.
Security logs (hashed IP request counters) are deleted within 2 days. Location requests are kept until the location is added or for 12 months, whichever comes first. To delete your account and personal data, email us at support.washrooms@gmail.com from the address you sign in with. We acknowledge requests within 24 hours and complete them within 15 days, unless the law requires us to keep certain records for longer. Please note that washroom listings you added may be retained in the public directory in an anonymized form (no longer linked to you), so that facilities other people rely on are not removed.
10. Your Rights
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and subject to your location, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you and know how it is processed.
- Correct or update inaccurate or incomplete data (you can edit your listings and reviews directly in the app).
- Request erasure of your personal data and withdraw your consent at any time.
- Nominate another person to exercise these rights on your behalf in the event of your death or incapacity.
- Raise a complaint with us (Section 13) and, if it isn't resolved, complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 13. Withdrawing consent will not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal.
11. Children
Washrooms is meant for adults. If you are under 18, please use it only with the consent and supervision of a parent or legal guardian, who agrees to this policy on your behalf. We do not knowingly track children, target them with advertising or monitor their behaviour. If you believe a child has shared personal data with us without that consent, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Security & Breaches
We protect your data with encrypted connections (HTTPS), row level security on our database so each account can only reach the records it is allowed to, server-side access controls, and rate limiting against abuse. No system is perfectly secure, so please don't post sensitive personal information in reviews or photos.
If a personal data breach affects you, we will inform you and the Data Protection Board of India as required by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, including what happened and the steps you can take.
